End it: Shining a Light on Slavery

Warning: This post is not for the faint hearted. It is for the kind hearted, the justice-hearted and the compassionate-hearted.

Slavery. Doesn’t really exist any more right? That guy, Will Wilberforce, he sorted it out didn’t he? They made a movie about it after all.

Shockingly, just because its from Hollywood, does not mean the issue is taken care of. Today, on this day in 2013, there are 27 MILLION slaves in thw world. Maybe you have heard this before, maybe you are just learning this now but try wrap your head around that number, just try. Here are some other things there are over a million of:

There are 22 million people in Australia

20 million burgers are eaten in America, everyday
PSY has made 8.8 million of his hit song Gangnam Style
And the slave trade makes $32 BILLION DOLLARS a year

This is real. The slave trade did not disappear with William Wilberforce, it went underground. It got even uglier, with 8 out of 10 cases of slavery involving sex trafficking and 50% of slaves being children. The world has turned a blind eye to this problem and I don’t know about you, but when I look at the number, I despair. think, it is happening far away, in places I cannot get to, when in actual fact there are slaves trapped in the USA and the UK right not, and more coming in everyday

It is the grossest injustice. It is so overwhelming that it cannot seem true. That girls as young as 8 are being used in the sex trade. That women and children are made to work, build and labour through fear and intimidation. There are people in this “modern” world treated as little more than animals. And it is all very uncomfortable for us in the West, where we have everything.
That is what angers me the most. We do have an incredible amount. A fact about us:

If you have access to 3 meals a day, go to school, and sleep in a bed that is your own, you are in the richest 2% of the world.

You can find out the facts for yourself, they are staggering and inhuman. But I do not want this post to be a guilt trip. For you to read this, feel sad for a moment and then return to normal life because,

Yes. We, as a society and a generation that have been blessed with so much, can do something to change the facts. We can carry on the work of Wilberforce, for it is far from finished. Now it is true, not everyone can rush off to Cambodia or the Philippines and run around pulling slaves out of brothels , as much as you might want to. The key to ending this trade is awareness. It is bringing what is done in secret, what is done in sin in the dark and throwing it into the light.

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16

If you do not like what you have read, even if you already aware of this huge flaw in humanities existence, take time to sign this pledge and just have a looked at this website:

Thanks for highlighting the plight of these people who are being held in such cruel bondage. And I agree it is time to stand up to this dark evil and shine a light on slavery.
